HyperCat Helps Launch HyperCatCity

A group of technology companies and government bodies based in the United Kingdom have launched a collaborative project aimed at accelerating technologies and infrastructures designed to improve energy, transportation, waste management, water use and security in cities. Dubbed HyperCatCity, the project is headquartered in the Urban Innovation Centre (UIC), run by Future Cities Catapult, an organization that is developing smart city projects by bringing together architects, engineers, designers, academics and business professionals. HyperCatCity's backers include Innovate UK (the U.K. government's innovation arm), the Mayor of London's Office, the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corp. (OPDC), BT, Cisco, Flexeye, KPMG, Symantec and WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff.

As the name implies, HyperCatCity has ties with the HyperCat Consortium, which has developed the HyperCat specification to support interoperability between Internet of Things services and applications. IoT platform developer Flexeye is leading the HyperCat specification development and is played a leading role in setting up HyperCatCity. The company serves as the project's administrator and provides program management. Many organizations involved in the development and deployment of the HyperCat spec are also involved in HyperCatCity, including BT, Cisco and Symantec.

HyperCatCity is working with the OPDC, which is a development project in northwest London formed in April by London mayor Boris Johnson to support the construction of a major transportation project, as a strategic partner. HyperCatCity partners are also together on other U.K. and international smart-city development bids.

Icon Labs and Renesas Electronics America Collaborate on Embedded Security Solution
